Couponing Lesson 2: Choose Your Store

I know that in Lesson 1, I covered a lot about Publix. That's because that's where I shop and I wanted to share everything I have learned from shopping there. Now, you DON'T have to shop Publix if you favor a different store, the main thing is to find a store that doubles manufacturer coupons. There are several stores in Alabama to choose from. Working Mom Coupons has a list by location HERE

After you choose your store, you should learn the store's policy regarding doubling coupons and stacking (combining a STORE coupon and Manufacturer coupon on same item.) You need to find out whether or not they have limits on the number of on-sale items that you can purchase in a single transaction. You need to find out if they accept competitor coupons and if so, what stores they consider a competitor. Find out if they have any Club's or a Saving's card program and be sure you get signed up to every incentive program that the store provides!

You CAN NOT learn all this in a week, or even a month! Don't try! It takes time to learn a completely new way of shopping. I would set aside $5 - $10 dollars to go do small trips the first couple of weeks. When you go to the store, you can ask questions and learn as you go. All I ask is that you learn and abide by the coupon rules of the store. Never try to "get one over" on the store because they will not be reimbursed for fraudulent coupons or coupons used on the wrong items.

Never copy coupons, this is illegal! Internet coupons usually limit you to 2 per computer, but there have been times that I could print up to 8 per computer. I printed every one of them, though, NO COPIES!

After you choose your store and have your $5 - $10 set aside, you need to get your list ready. Southern Savers covers almost every grocery store  in the south:

Walmart
Winn-Dixie
Target
Publix
Kroger
Harris Teeter
Bi-Lo
Sweetbay
Lowes Foods
Ingles
Harvey's
H-E-B
Food Lion
Food City
Commissary
Bloom

Jenny over at Southern Savers will have the sales ad complete with coupon matchup's available for you each week. Yes, she gives you each item in the ad and tells you what coupons are available for the item. She even gives you an estimated cost of the item after the coupon is used! She does all the work for you! All you have to do is check her out each week! I always get the FREE items, especially if I can get overage to cover other items in my cart! I stock up on items that are at a great price that week that my family uses often. I also get my usual grocery items (milk, bread, produce...etc.) that I need for the week. Choose the items you want to purchase, gather your coupons, and head to the store!

Do your shopping and head to the checkout! If you have a FREE product coupon, place this/these items on the belt LAST and hand over the FREE product(s) coupon(s) first. That way the cashier doesn't have to go searching through the transaction to find out how much the item was and this will also speed up checkout experience! If you have a "Money off purchase" coupon, hand it over next. Keep in mind that some stores will not take this type of coupon before your other coupons are entered. For example, I can spend $25 worth BEFORE coupons at Publix and I can use one of these on top of other coupons. Some stores will want you to have $25 total AFTER the other coupons have been entered. Then, hand over any STORE and Competitor coupons. Lastly, hand over the manufacturer coupons. I hand over all my coupons at once, but they are stacked in this order. Watch your total drop and be amazed at the money you saved in this one shopping trip!

This is a good start! I hope this has been helpful to you if you have a question about something feel free to ask away! That's what I'm here for! HAPPY SHOPPING! =)

Shopping with coupons at Publix! Lesson 1, The Basics

This is the 1st post of a learning series about couponing at Publix. I gathered information from a variety of sources when I began couponing and shopping Publix. I want to put all the information in one place to make it easier for you to learn all the tips and tricks to save you and your family big bucks at the grocery store. Here is everything you need to know to get started! If I left anything out or you have any questions, leave me a comment!

(The RED highlighted words are links to another site. It will not open a new tab or window when you left click on it, but if you right click and tell it to open in a new tab, it will let you come back here to finish reading this article.)

1. First you need to find out what stores the Publix YOU shop at considers competitors. The wonderful Michelle over at IHEARTPUBLIX has a list of stores and what competitors' coupons they accept! Go HERE  for that list! My Publix accepts Target, Save-A-Lot, Winn-Dixie, & Bruno's. The competitor coupons that I use the most are Target because you can print them off here: Target Coupons

2. You need to read and abide by the Publix Coupon Policy here: Publix Coupon Policy

3. Publix has MANY store coupons available that can be stacked with Manufacturer's coupons for SUPER savings. Here is where you can find those coupons:
  • Printable Publix Store coupons can be found at Cooking With Kraft , though not ALL coupons printed from this site are STORE coupons. If it has NO bar code, but instead has an L.U. #, then it's a store coupon. (Iheartpublix usually gives a heads up which coupons are which!) =)
  • Printable Publix Store coupons can also sometimes be found in the Publix - Weekly Ad
  • Other Printable Publix Store coupons are sometimes available at Great Deals on Great Meals during promotion periods.
  • Publix has flyers that come out about every 2 weeks which have coupons and deals not found in the weekly sales ad. One is the Yellow Advantage Flyer and the other is the Green Advantage Flyer
  • Publix also has several Booklets that come out which include store coupons and manufacturer coupons. You can find these at the service desk at most stores.
  • Publix also has several magazines you can sign up for to be mailed to you:
-*Family Style Magazine
-*Grape Magazine
  • Publix also has a few clubs that you can sign up to and receive valuable coupons in the mail:
- Publix Baby Club-If you have little ones under 2 or are expecting, you should sign up to the Baby Club! You will receive a monthly newsletter filled with advice and money saving STORE coupons that can be stacked with manufacturer's coupons for super savings!

-Publix also has a club for those children who are over 2. Publix Preschool Pals Club-This one is for the preschooler. You will receive a monthly newsletter filled with advice and gifts and money saving coupons!

-Publix also has a club for the pets in your life. Publix Pet Club-They will send out money saving coupons.
  • You can sometimes find Store coupons in the Sunday Newspaper inserts, too.
See, there are a lot of places to get awesome store coupons which can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for GREAT savings!

Where you can find manufacturer's coupons:
  • Sunday Newspaper Inserts: Each week, there will be some or all of the following inserts included in the Sunday paper: Smart Source (SS), Red Plum (RP), and once a month usually around the 1st, there is a Proctor and Gamble (P&G), and sometimes there is a General Mills (GM) insert.
  • Many printable manufacturer coupons found on various sites. I have a list to the right you can check out! =)
  • Blinkie coupons: These are found in front of the item at the store. They have a dispenser with a blinking light.
  • Tearpad coupons and Rebates are also found at the store on the store shelf or sometimes on a display board! =)
  • You can contact companies and tell them how much you love their product! They might just send you some coupons! This is my favorite way to get coupons for items I use that I can't seem to ever find a coupon for! You can also contact them with a complaint of a product and most likely, they will refund it! Couponing to Disney has a FULL  list of Companies & the link to contact them here: Writing companies to receive coupons
  • Peelie coupons are coupons found on the product at the store and you have to "peel" them off.
  • Sometimes manufacturers print coupons on the box of product that you can cut out after your finished using the product. These are often found on boxed and frozen goods!
  • Manufacturers also sometimes put small coupon booklets inside of the product and when you open it, you get a nice surprise!
  • You can find coupons in magazines, too! All You is probably one of my favorite magazines to subscribe to. It has tons of coupons throughout and lots of nice recipes and craft ideas. It also has fabulous fashion and savings advice!
Now that you know where to find all your coupons, let's talk about planning your shopping trip to Publix! Every Monday, I HEART PUBLIX lists the new ad that will start the following Wednesday or Thursday for some. So, every Monday I (patiently) wait for Michelle over at I Heart Publix to get the preview of the ad posted with coupon matchup's. She does all the work for you! She posts each item that is on sale and under the item she lists the available coupons (and where the coupons are located) that match up with the sale item!

Then, I get to work. I see which items I am interested in purchasing and if I have the coupons that are available. I sometimes rely on  Coupon Beat to get coupons I may not have received in my local newspaper inserts. You can also check to see if Ebay might have the coupon you need. I almost always purchase FREE and CHEAP items, even if I don't use the product, I can share/donate it to someone who can use it! I usually only purchase items at Publix that are on sale and/or I have a coupon for. I sometimes purchase milk and bread and I almost always purchase produce, which is usually on sale. Sometimes I purchase meats at Publix and sometimes I don't. It depends upon the sale price. I do buy more than just groceries at Publix. There are great sales on household products, hygiene and beauty products, pet food...etc.

If there is an item or two that I need for my weekly meals that I don't have in my stockpile and they're not on sale at Publix that week, I make the purchase at Walmart or Dollar General. These are the best places that I have found in my area with the lowest prices on those needed recipe ingredients.

Well, I guess that's all for now. Please send me your questions &/Or comments and I will do my best to answer your questions in future posts. I hope that this series will help you in your own coupon journey! I hope you all have a blessed week!

Matthew 6:33-34:
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it's own."

Publix Trip 9/7 - Spent $50.94, Saved $107.53 - 68% Savings

Wondering how I get my Percentage Saved? I use the following equation:

Total Savings / (Total Spent + Total Savings) = % Saved

This was definitely a freezer stock-up trip! My brother-in-law gave us his deep freeze to use and I am so taking advantage of it...LOL! I have started a small stockpile and hope to add a little bit to it every week! I already have a small stockpile of dry boxed items (cereal, boxed potatoes, pasta, pasta sauce, crackers, juice boxes...etc.) So, now I can work on filling up my freezer! =) We had an awesome trip to Publix tonight! I am so thankful that the Lord has blessed me with the ability to save money on our groceries and I feel like He has called me to share this knowledge with others! I hope that my posting my trips every week is not coming across as if I am boasting! I like to SHOW you how I got the deals, so that you can SEE how it works and soon be on YOUR way to saving money at the grocery store. We will be sharing pasta, pasta sauce, bbq sauce and salad dressing from this grocery trip today! I encourage you also to share of your abundance through couponing and everything else in your life. Through couponing, God has allowed my family to share so much with others. It's an amazing feeling to be used by God to bless others. All you have to do is surrender. Let God know that you want him to use you, and He will!

May you all have a wonderful Labor Day, despite all the rain here in the south! =)
